Re fit for the Open
Background
Officially opened in the July of 1988, the Nicklaus golf course at St Mellion in Cornwall is regarded as one of the finest golf courses in Europe. The course, which is Nicklaus’ first in the UK, will host the 2009 English Open. Jack’s signature is all over this incredible course – high tees with good views of the fairways, water hazards and the requirement to place the ball in the right position in order to score well.
The St Mellion resort has undergone re-development as part of its preparation for the English Open. This meant the relocation of the golf shop. The shop had traditionally done quite well in terms of sales, however a recent trend for offers and discounted goods had been noticed.
The Refit
Replan’s excellent reputation within the golf industry meant that David Moon, Golf Operations Manager for St Mellion immediately considered the company to do the design and fit for the new store. He visited 3 Hammers golf shop in Wolverhampton – a previous Replan success and this made his decision.
Replan was briefed to provide a shop which concentrated on selling soft goods with less emphasis on equipment. David provided Replan with the existing shop’s sales mix and quantity of units sold to give the designers the whole picture from the beginning of the project.
David had full input when the designs were being created and worked with Replan to make several changes during the process. There were a few changes in dimension and the new shop was designed to incorporate a changing room, all of which were handled professionally and ran smoothly.
The Outcome
David Moon said: “The shop fitting took place over a four day period and fulfilled the original brief perfectly. Once the re-development of the whole St Mellion resort is complete I would expect a significant increase in sales. We are now able to stock higher quality brands that increase turnover, spend per round and maintain decent margin.
“There have been several comments from both Club members and people within the trade and the overall impression is of a top quality shop which befits a quality resort. The Golf Operations team have a real sense of pride at working in such a high quality store.
“From the first site visit Replan were helpful and efficient. They offer opinions backed up by expertise and their assistance with the design was true to both the brief and the budget. The fitting team deserve a mention too, the standard of work was excellent and they ensured the shop was left in a presentable state.
