Design of a new “outdoor” retail area with a homely and outdoorsy feel, while still appearing high end.
Challenges
An Adidas display was set to move into the space previously occupied by the outdoor products, and so the entire store had to be redesigned to make room for this new ‘outdoor’ retail area.
Client requested the store took inspiration from Barbour and George Fisher shops in how they would like certain items to be displayed – they wished to take inspiration from Barbour’s wooden floorboards, Persian rugs and how well presented George Fisher shops always came across as.
Merchandise
The shop redesign and fit had to consider space for the following merchandise:
- Outdoor shoes – ski boots, wellies, walking boots, roller-skates
- Large central fitting and seating area
- Oven and heater for ski fitting
- Outdoor apparel – ski coats for men, women and children, rain coats, socks, bags
- Branded displays – UGGS, North Face, Patagonia, R.M Williams
- Electronic accessories
- Running technology
- Sunglasses
- Small Luggage
- Energy Bars and Isotonic Sports Drinks
Solution
This project required the design and management of real oak flooring, consideration of ceiling rafts, bespoke stand manufacturing, spot lighting as well as general lighting and electrics.
A lot of research was completed prior to agreeing the final design. The “outdoors” briefing provided a lot of inspiration, and there was a clear goal from the client as to how they wanted the store to be presented. As part of the process, the Replan team visited shops across the country to ensure that we had the right feel for the store in mind before beginning the design planning process.
After discussing a number of different colours for the floorboards to be used in store, a number of full sized sample boards were ordered to see how these looked in relation to the rest of the store. The decision to use MFC to contrast the real Walnut and Oak already in use with the store contributed towards the feelings of homeliness and comfort requested by the client. We were also able to bring in a number of different textures to truly bring the ‘outdoors in’.
